Lewis and Fay make it back to back wins in the XCM Series

A star studded Elite Field lined up on the start line for the start of Round 2 of the XCM Series in Kowan Forest on Saturday. Series leaders Shaun Lewis and Jenny Fay in the purple leaders were flanked by their team mates of the Rockstar Racing team. King of the Mountain Adrian Jackson, Andrew Blair, Peter Hatton and Australian XCM champion Jason English were some of the riders out to take the jersey off Lewis' back.

Lewis showed early on that he was not planning on relinquishing his lead by taking the maximum points for King of The Mountain ahead of Peter Hatton, Adrian Jackson, Dylan Cooper and Andrew Blair. This places Lewis in equal first in the KOM competition with Jackson who both have 5 points. Cooper is in equal 2nd with Hatton, both on 2 points. Jason English unfortunately flatted just before the KOM which put him out of contention for top honors.

The KOM competition was also the start of the 20km un-timed section which saw a group of 15 riders come together. The un-timed section in this event makes for complexity in tactics. After the un-timed section the riders are uncertain of exactly where they place overall on the second part of the course, and have to wait for their overall time to be calculated after the finish.

XCM Series Round 2

Start of Round 2 of the Real Insurance XCM Series...

As the riders reached Stromlo a group containing Lewis, Cooper, Jackson, Blair and Hatton formed. With every millisecond counting in the very close battle the riders had to take their chances navigating through the slower 50km field on the Stromlo singletrack. This caused a few crashes with Hatton losing the most time.

Series leader Shaun Lewis beat Cooper and Blair in a close sprint, increasing his hold on the Series lead, with Jackson and Hatton following closely.

The women's race was once again dominated by Jenny Fay. Fay convincingly won the maximum QOM points and the overall race. Becky Mates made her Series debut for 2012 scoring 2 points in the QOM competition and finishing 2nd overall.

The 50km Half Marathon event was hotly contested by a few very strong riders. The Half Marathon competition is promising to become a specialist 2 hour smashfest, perfect for cross country specialists, ex 100km participants or beginner riders.

The podium at Round 2 of the XCM Series...

The next event takes the riders to St. Albans for the Convict100. The Convict100 is the 3rd event in 3 weeks in the Series and will truly test the riders in a completely different level on the rough course.

The Real Insurance XCM Series is the biggest mountain bike Series in Australia's history with over 7,000 riders expected to participate. Riders 3 best results out of 6 count towards their Series ranking, allowing for mechanicals, bad days or busy schedules. The next events in the Series is the Convict100 in St Albans, Stevens Bikes Husky100 in Callala Beach, Wollombi Wild Ride in Wollombi and the Briars Highland Fling in Bundanoon.

Lewis & Fay take Round 1 of the XCM Series in Victoria

There was undoubtedly a focussed vibe in Woodend VIC as riders arrived days early to ride parts of the Wombat100 course in preparation of Round #1 of the Real Insurance XCM Series. The Wombat100 is one of two iconic Australian mountain bike events hosted by Maximum Adventure, attracting over 2,500 participants annually.

A chilly autumn Victorian morning greeted the riders for an early 7am start at Cammaray Waters. Adrian Jackson set out from the gun driving record Elite field of over 50 riders at a blistering pace. Team mates Shawn Lewis and defending XCM Series champion Dylan Cooper managed to match his pace, but it was Jackson to crest the top of the KOM climb first. This put Jackson in the lead in the KOM Series competition. Jackson will be marked at the next round in Canberra as he will be wearing the KOM jersey.

Shaun Lewis wins the Wombat 100 MTB Marathon....

Andy Blair had an unfortunate early puncture and had to chase the leading trio with Ben Mather. The two very experienced riders were able to catch up the leaders just before the 75km mark, showing that they are on top form. The trio of Lewis, Jackson and Cooper put the hammer down as soon as they were caught and managed to open another gap, which they held until the end. A few kilometres before the finish Lewis and Jackson got away from Cooper and it was down to an exciting sprint finish. Lewis just pipped Jackson by a few inches for an important and well deserved win. Cooper followed shortly after with Mather and Blair rounding out the top 5.

The women's Elite field was stronger than at any previous Real Insurance XCM Series event. Riders like Peta Mullins, Tory Thomas and Jess Douglas lined up alongside defending champion Jenny Fay. Fay and Mullins set themselves apart early, but Fay proved to be in a class of her own as she pulled away and won both the QOM competition and the overall event by a convincing margin.

The 2nd leg of the of the Series will take the riders to Canberra for the Capital Punishment next weekend. Lewis and Fay will be wearing the coveted Real Insurance purple leader's jerseys, with Jackson and Mullins the King and Queen of the Mountain Jerseys. An even stronger field is expected to line up in Canberra next week as more riders are launching their campaigns in the Series.

XCM Series counts down to launch

As of today there is less than one week remaining until the first clip-in of the 2012 Real Insurance XCM Series. Round one of the six race series is the Wombat 100 in Woodend, Victoria. If you’ve been planning for a head start in 2012 XCM series then you’d best have those base km’s in your legs already, as it’s too late for last minute training.

XCM1

Race the XCM Series.. You'll be smiling from ear to ear.

The Wombat 100 will be the first ever event in the XCM series to take place outside of NSW/ACT, and entries have been flowing in at a rapid rate for the first round of Australia’s premier mountain bike race series. Entries are well spread over the various categories, and hits on the ‘Rankings’ section of the Cyclenation website are extremely high this week, indicating that everyone wants a refresher on how they fared last year and who they want to beat this year. It seems that the Real Insurance XCM Series is really hitting a chord with the inner competitor in all of us, not just those racing for the big prizes. If you haven’t entered the Wombat yet then move your cursor over to the right and get to it right immediately.

The Wombat will serve as the entre’ in what will be an intense first month of the 2012 Real Insurance XCM Series. Riders looking for maximum points, or maximum challenge, will back up the following Saturday for the Capital Punishment in Canberra, then again on the following weekend for the Convict 100 in Sydney. Three very different races in three weeks, in three states. Wow! If ever there was a chance to pick up points in the XCM Series then this is it. Those that are not fit now will have to hope and pray that they can find form for the rest of the series, as their best three results will count for their final standing!

XCM2

A peak of form over the next three weeks could propel a well prepared rider into the three remaining races of the series with a big advantage, but it won’t be as simple as that. Only a complete mountain biker will be able to take full advantage of this concentrated three-race block. The Wombat 100 has a deceiving amount if climbing but the eventual winner will be the most fluid rider over the smooth and twisting singletrack of Womabt State Forest. Riders with maximum power are best suited to the terrain of the Capital Punishment, which features the least climbing of the first three races and plenty of open trails and paddocks for high speed riding in the big ring. The Convict 100 also suits a powerful rider as there is little pure singletrack, but the brutally rough and technical nature of the Old Convict Road section of the course can split the field apart in only a handful of kilometres and technically confident riders will have a clear advantage.

The Mens Elite field for the Wombat features the typically strong Rockstar Racing team of defending Real Insurance XCM Series champion Dylan Cooper. DC will be supported (rivalled?) by teammate Shaun Lewis. Other big names returning from last year’s series include Andy Blair as well as Ben Mather from Tasmania. The Subaru-MarathonMTB.com team has a solid line up with Nick Both, Graeme Arnott and Tate Dogan. Perhaps the most noteworthy feature will be the contingent of XCM Series newcomers, led by Andy Fellows and Adrian Jackson, two of the biggest names in Australian marathon racing. Andy will travel all the way from the Sunshine Coast just to score XCM points, and AJ needs no introduction as one of the hardest and strongest riders around.

As strong as the men’s field is, the women’s field is truly stacked. Defending Real Insurance XCM Series champion Jenny Fay will have to fight to the death to defend her purple Real Insurance leaders jersey from 2011. Jenny was almost untouchable in 2011, but the quality of the Wombat field is as good as it gets. Jenny will line up alongside Becky Mates, Jessica Douglas, Peta Mullens, Claire Stevens and Tory Thomas to name just a few of her well-credentialed rivals. It’s a field worthy of an Australian National Championship race.

With so many of the big guns ready to kick off 2012 with a bang and with so much on the line in an intense three week block it’s just too hard to name a favourite, or even a top five. Three races in three weeks on three different courses in three different states. How good is this series going to be! Bring on the racing!

The second leg of the Series and final 3 events are the Stevens Bikes Husky 100, Wollombi Wild Ride and the final the Briars Highland Fling.
